'Tragic conflict of loyalty'

To commemorate the 750th anniversary of the first English parliament, a group of eminent parliamentarians and constitutional experts have been asked to nominate their favourite speech from Westminster.

Editor of Hansard - the official parliamentary record - Lorraine Sutherland nominated the resignation speech of Sir Geoffrey Howe, then Margaret Thatcher's deputy prime minister, in the Commons on 13 November 2000.

The BBC's Democracy Day, marking the anniversary of England's first Parliament, will take place across radio, TV and online on Tuesday 20 January.
