Philip Hammond: 'We are committed to 2% defence target'

The Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, has said Prime Minister David Cameron "is not prepared to preside over any further cuts to our regular armed forces".

But he also told the BBC's Andrew Marr that there would be "very difficult decisions" for the government over how to cut the deficit further.

He said that the party was "committed to the two per cent target" - referring to Nato's target of counties spending two per cent of GDP on defence - but then would not be drawn on the question of whether a Conservative government beyond the general election would commit long-term to that target.
