UKIP leadership: Chairman Paul Oakden on Woolfe vote

The late of arrival of Steven Woolfe’s nomination papers to stand as UKIP party leader has meant he has not made it to the final shortlist for members to vote on.

Party chairman Paul Oakden said it was important to hit the deadlines, and added: “It’s not petty, it’s the rules.”

He told the World at One’s Martha Kearney that the party had "six incredibly capable candidates", half of which were women, adding: "Today's events are regrettable, but they are certainly not going to cause us the problems I think the media are expecting.
