Midwife-led unit to help tackle Edinburgh's baby boom
A new midwife-led unit is to open at Scotland's busiest maternity hospital to help meet the demand created by the capital city's rising birth rate.
The facilities at the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh will have the capacity for up to 1,500 deliveries each year.
NHS Lothian hopes the new unit will reduce the need to transfer expectant mothers to other hospitals during peak times because of a shortage of beds.
