Higgs boson find: 'Peter was in tears'

Scientists involved at Cern describe the moment they were told a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson had been discovered.

The particle had been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain how matter attains its mass.

Prof Peter Higgs, who first proposed the idea of a boson in particle physics, said: "I regarded it as a cheers for the home team and the home team were the two experiments, Atlas and CMS, with 1,500 members each... maybe they were cheering me too but that was a minor issue".

BBC Scotland Investigates: Peter Higgs - Particle Man will be broadcast on BBC One Scotland on Wednesday 17 April at 22:35 BST.
