Citizens Theatre in £4.9m pound development

Glasgow's Citizens Theatre has launched the acting careers of Stanley Baxter, Rupert Everett and Alan Rickman.

The theatre is has been awarded £4.9m Heritage Lottery funding towards its upgrade, the biggest refurbishment in its 135 year history.

Originally opened as a variety theatre in 1878, the building has been home to the Citizens Theatre Company since 1945.
