Scottish independence: Opposing views on the economy

First Minister Alex Salmond has set out a plan to boost manufacturing in Scotland by 30% over the next 16 years.

Mr Salmond said an independent Scotland could offer tax breaks and capital investment to boost the economy, adding: "The type of manufacturing will change, of course, it will be life sciences, it will be environmental, it will be renewables.

"The type will change, skilled engineering, but the opportunity is there."

Alistair Darling, leader of the pro-Union Better Together campaign, highlighted the benefits to business of staying in the UK, arguing: "All across the world you see that where you've got a border it affects trade badly."
