Nicola Sturgeon promises 'a better Scotland for all'

Nicola Sturgeon has laid out her intentions for serving the people of Scotland and has pledged to help create a better Scotland for children to grow up in.

The first minister elect promised to serve all people of Scotland in the Scottish Parliament: "My role as first minister will be to help build a Scotland that all those who live and work here can be proud of, a nation both social democratic and socially just."

Ms Sturgeon, who was elected leader of the SNP at the party conference, said she hoped her election as the first female first minister would inspire girls and women across the country.

Referring to the independence referendum, which prompted her predecessor Alex Salmond to stand down, she said: "I will always argue the case for more powers for this parliament.... I will also and always do my utmost to govern well with the powers we have now."
