Nicola Sturgeon: 'Scotland will intervene in Article 50'

Scotland will formally intervene in the legal wrangle over the UK's decision to leave the EU.

The High Court ruled last week that MPs must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU by triggering article 50.

The UK government immediately said it would appeal to the Supreme Court, with a hearing due next month.

The Lord Advocate, Scotland's most senior law officer, will now apply to be heard in the case.

He will argue that the consent of the Scottish Parliament should also be sought before Article 50 is triggered.

The UK government had hope to use the Royal prerogative, a circumstance which would have negated the need for parliamentary approval of the process.
