Gary Sobers 'six sixes cricket ball' dropped from auction

A cricket ball thought to have been used during a moment of sporting history has been withdrawn from auction due to doubts over its authenticity.

Gary, later Sir Garfield, Sobers was the first man to hit six sixes in one over in Swansea in 1968, but a ball claimed to be the one used has come under scrutiny.

The ball sold at auction for £26,400 in 2006, but doubts on how many balls were used during the over have also arisen.

The man who bowled to Sobers on the evening was Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash.

He said the ball was made by a different manufacturer, and journalist Grahame Lloyd has gathered evidence which questions whether the ball auctioned was the ball thumped for six consecutive sixes.

Auctioneers Bonhams have removed the ball from a forthcoming auction.

Mr Lloyd outlined his findings to BBC Radio Wales presenter Gareth Lewis.
