Foreign language learning call by Welsh Conservatives

The Welsh Conservatives are launching a campaign for primary school pupils to start learning a foreign language from the age of seven.

It is currently only compulsory at key stage 3, so pupils begin studying a language at 11 and can stop again at 14.

The number of GCSE entries for French has halved since 1999, while entries for German have dropped by 60%.

David Jones, business development manager at Wolfestone Translation in Swansea, told Felicity Evans of BBC Radio Wales about the advantages of teaching languages to young children.

The programme also heard how Rhyl High School in Denbighshire was teaching National Vocational Qualifications in foreign languages tailored to business needs.
