Glyn Derw school in Cardiff changes timetable to boost literacy

In the past few years, a series of damning reports have highlighted significant concerns about poor literacy and numeracy standards in Welsh schools.

Some 40% of pupils are starting secondary school with reading ages below their actual age. In one school in Cardiff, that figure is even higher.

Glyn Derw High School has opted to significantly change the traditional curriculum for Year 7 pupils - those in the first year of secondary school - and dedicate half of the timetable to literacy and numeracy.
