Leighton Andrews pleased at 'U-turn' in England on scrapping GCSEs

Welsh Education Minister Leighton Andrews has welcomed news that UK Education Secretary Michael Gove is set to scrap his plans to replace some GCSE exams in England with a new tougher qualification, the English baccalaureate certificate in English, maths and science from 2015.

Mr Andrews decided to keep GCSEs and A levels in Wales following a review of the system and says Mr Gove's expected U-turn decision in England shows a renewed faith in the validity of GCSEs.

"I'm glad to welcome a repentant sinner," he told BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast on Thursday morning.
