Support local butchers says Conservative agriculture spokeswoman

Conservative rural affairs spokeswoman Antoinette Sandbach AM said the main lesson from the horsemeat scandal is "support your local butcher" as they source meat locally.

She told Oliver Hides on BBC Radio Wales that saga undermines confidence in the entire industry and that there needs to be full "traceability" in the meat supply chain.

And she also raised questions over Welsh government guidance to local authorities about their checks on local suppliers.

Alun Davies, deputy minister for agriculture, food and fisheries has already said it is important that everyone should have confidence in the meat they buy.

He said: "I hope that consumers will continue to support the Welsh red meat sector, and will have confidence in the systems we have in place to ensure that when we have Welsh beef products, we're enjoying meat of the highest quality."
