Monmouthshire bin bag limit 'may be only first council'

The first Welsh council to restrict the amount of rubbish people leave out starts a two-bag maximum from next week.

Monmouthshire will now pick up only two bags of general waste in fortnightly collections, but there will be no restrictions for recycling.

It is part of a drive to reduce the money paid by the council in landfill tax.

The organisation which represents local authorities - the Welsh Local Government Association - says other councils around the country could follow their lead.

Rachel Jowitt, waste strategy & resources manager at Monmouthshire council, told BBC Radio Wales that local authorities faced little choice about limiting bin bags.

But Patrick Maycock-Jones, the ward councillor for West End on Caldicot Town Council, fears it could lead to an increase in fly-tipping.
