Ian Johnston: Carmel Napier 'did not accept PCC's role'

Gwent's police and crime commissioner (PCC), Ian Johnston, has told a group of MPs that former chief constable Carmel Napier just "did not accept" the role of a PCC.

Mr Johnston is giving evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee after he told Mrs Napier to quit her job or face being forced out.

Replying to questions by the committee's chair, Keith Vaz, Mr Johnston said he was surprised by the scale of interest in the incident.

He also said the differences between him and the former chief constable were "much more fundamental" than a clash of personalities.

Mrs Napier also answered questions from the committee about the events surrounding her retirement on 7 June.
