Organ donation: Wales opts for presumed consent change

Wales has become the first country in the UK to introduce a system of presumed consent for organ donation.

After five hours of debate in the Senedd on Tuesday, assembly members voted in favour of the change. Some 43 voted in favour, with eight against and two abstentions.

It will give doctors the right to remove people's organs when they die unless they have registered an objection.

The Welsh government claims the new law will save lives but opponents still have concerns it could add to the distress of bereaved families.
