Food scores 'for public safety,' Prof Hugh Pennington says
A new law forcing cafes and restaurants in Wales to display their food hygiene ratings needs more resources to meet deadlines, a union has warned.
Around 23,000 food outlets will have to show "scores on the doors" in prominent places from November.
The union Unison fears environmental health inspectors will struggle to keep up with demand for re-inspections to improve businesses' with low ratings.
Bacteriologist Prof Hugh Pennington told Radio Wales' Oliver Hides the rules were needed to ensure food safety.
The discussion began with Councillor Neil Moore, the Welsh Local Government Association's spokesperson for regulatory services, saying Unison was right to raise its concerns.
