Nelson Mandela death: St Teilo Revd Robert Dennis reflects on the man

A vicar who once gave communion to Nelson Mandela says the former South African president was a man of austere authority and yet very humble.

The Reverend Robert Dennis was brought up in South Africa during apartheid but now lives in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, where he is vicar of St Teilo's Church in Mardy.

Revd Dennis remembers how Mandela addressed the children in the church that day in 1990 and asked if any ever became the president of South Africa in the future that they promise him they would never allow apartheid ever to return.

"That was one of the highlights. A sermon worth a thousand words," he said.
