D-Day: Engineer role aided safety

John Wintle joined the army when World War II broke out as a member of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

He was transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1942.

Now secretary of the Normandy Veterans Association, looking back he says he was lucky to have been in the REME because it kept him off the front line and gave him more chance of survival.

He told BBC Radio Wales: "Every time I go over into one of the cemeteries and see the ages of the lads that didn't come back - there but for the grace of God. It could be me."
