Pisa: Chief says Wales 'lacks ambition' and must try harder

A lack of ambition and complacency has led to Wales being the worst performing UK nation in Pisa education tests, the organisation's chief has said.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's Andreas Schleicher said pupils must try harder and the culture of what can be achieved must change.

His comments come as First Minister Carwyn Jones prepares to give a keynote address at a Cardiff conference on the international education tests.

"It's also been an actual slippage and there's sort of less aspiration and less ambition in the system," he told BBC Radio Wales.

"You can expect a lower performance from disadvantaged schools but the fact that even schools in well-off areas of Wales don't live up to other schools in similar conditions shows that there is a bit of complacency in the system."
