Cardiff University researching self-healing potholes

Potholes are the bane of motorists and cyclists across the country, but is it the end of the road for them?

Scientists are looking into making them a thing of the past.

Cardiff University has been part of the research into a self-healing concrete material which could do reduce the need for road repairs.

The new material, being developed in conjunction with Bath and Cambridge scientists, uses bacteria in microcapsules to plug gaps and cracks opened up by bad weather.

When water enters a crack in the road, the bacteria burst out of the tiny capsules to produce a limestone seal.

Marje Harris describes the potholes on the lane which her family use in Swansea. It has not been repaired because it is on an unadopted road.
