Plans to end right-to-buy in Wales will 'protect stock'

Plans to end the right of social housing tenants to buy their homes will protect existing housing stock, housing minister Lesley Griffiths has said.

The right-to-buy scheme, a flagship policy of Margaret Thatcher, will be abolished in Wales if Labour remains in power after the 2016 assembly election.

In the meantime, Welsh ministers plan to cut the maximum discount available to social housing tenants wanting to buy their home from £16,000 to £8,000.

The scheme will also be immediately suspended in Carmarthenshire.
