WNO chief David Pountney's music cuts worries

It could take 15 years before the impact of cuts to music education services are felt, according to the chief executive of Welsh National Opera (WNO).

David Pountney told BBC Wales he was worried about the next generation of musicians and singers and fears the funding situation is "wiping out musical life at the grassroots."

Some local authorities have cut their support for subsidised school music lessons, while youth orchestras and choirs have also had their public funding reduced in recent years.

The Welsh Local Government Association said it was looking at how to run future services in a "dire" financial climate.
