Lower milk prices 'not sustainable' for producers

A cut to the price of milk may make production unsustainable for many Welsh farmers, a union has warned.

First Milk, one of the UK's largest dairy farmer co-operatives, will pay farmers 1p less per litre from 1 July, blaming lower commodity prices for the cut.

National Farmers Union (NFU) Cymru said the move was a "nightmare" for producers and could lead to many leaving the business.

Its president Stephen James called on First Milk to "get their act together" and increase prices "sooner rather than later".

Matthew Murray reports.
