'More critical care beds needed' - Royal College of Surgeons

The number of people waiting for treatment in Wales is equivalent to the population of Cardiff, a leading medical body has warned.

Waiting times are "unacceptably high" and need to be a top priority, said the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) in a "manifesto" ahead of next May's assembly election.

The RCS said almost 450,000 people are now waiting for treatment in Wales - 10% higher than three years ago.

Tim Havard, RCS director and a consultant general surgeon, also told BBC Wales health correspondent Owain Clarke operations were being cancelled on a weekly basis, because of the lack of critical care beds needed for patients when they come out of surgery.
