Ffos-y-Fran opencast mine in Merthyr Tydfil 'unbearable'

A protest by climate activists has halted work at the UK's largest opencast mine in Merthyr Tydfil.

About 300 protesters from campaign group Reclaim the Power were joined by Green Party leader Natalie Bennett at Ffos-y-Fran on Tuesday - two days before the assembly election.

Miller Argent, which runs the site, said it supported 230 jobs and affordable electricity.

One of the protesters, Robert Francis, from nearby Pontlottyn, explained that it was both local and global issues which led him to take part.
