Vaughan Gething: Still challenges for Betsi Cadwaladr health board

Improving mental health services is "the biggest area of challenge" facing the health board that runs the NHS in north Wales, Vaughan Gething has said.

It is a year since Betsi Cadawaladr health board was put in special measures by the Welsh Government.

Speaking to BBC Wales, the new health secretary praised efforts to improve health services outside normal working hours and said the public and staff now feel "more connected" to the healthboard's management.

But he said there was still a lot of work to do.

Special measures were imposed a year ago after various problems, including "institutional abuse" at a mental health ward in Denbighshire's Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Mr Gething - who dealt with Betsi management when deputy health minister - told BBC Wales health correspondent Owain Clarke there was no artificial deadline on when it would be free of intervention.
