Reported hate crimes increase by 60% since Brexit

Figures seen by BBC Wales show reported hate crimes in Wales were up 60% over the EU referendum period than the same time last year.

More than 600 incidents were recorded in June and July in 2016.

The figures show a similar rise in the number of racially motivated hate crimes.

First Minister Carwyn Jones has called on people in Wales to abandon the "abuse" unleashed by the referendum campaign.

Gareth Cuerden, Wales hate crime manager for Victim Support, said figures had "increased a lot more than expected".

Victim Support said the rise was also down to increased media reports of hate crime.
