Ambulance crash on 999 call could be 'catastrophic'

An ambulance crash while responding to an emergency call could be "catastrophic", the service's driver trainer has said.

It comes as figures show police cars, ambulances and fire engines were involved in at least 3,636 crashes between April 2011 and March 2016.

Andrew Challenger, head of driver education at Welsh Ambulance Service, said all drivers were trained to anticipate risks and respond to hazards on the road.

The service has 260 ambulances and 131 rapid response vehicle and its 1,500 emergency drivers attend about 250,000 999 calls a year.

Mr Challenger appealed to drivers not to panic when they see emergency vehicles and to find a safe place to pull in to allow them to pass.
