Wales' beaches lit up by eerie bioluminescent glow

The annual lightshow along the Welsh coast has begun again, with glowing phytoplankton marking shorelines with an eerie blue from bioluminescence.

The phenomenon can been seen in footage from Oxwich Bay on the Gower peninsula.

It is caused by the plankton emitting a glowing chemical used as a defence mechanism to ward off predators.
