'More school time' call for trainee teachers

A head teachers' leader has called for trainee teachers to spend more time in school, as an independent report calls for improvements.

Prof John Furlong said the quality of teacher training in Wales had "deteriorated" since he last looked at it nearly 10 years ago.

It follows hot on the heels of proposals for a radical overhaul of how and what children are taught.

Caroline Newman, vice-president of the National Association of Head Teachers Cymru, said trainees needed more classroom experience.
