Cwmbran super-hospital decision delay defended by Gething

The health secretary has given the go-ahead for a £350m super-hospital in south Wales, 12 years after the plan was first unveiled.

Vaughan Gething said the Specialist and Critical Care Centre near Cwmbran was expected to open in 2022.

The new hospital, to be built at Llanfrechfa Grange, is part of a plan to modernise health services run by the Aneurin Bevan health board.

First mooted in 2004, the plans were put on hold in 2009, before being put back on the agenda a year later.

Mr Gething said it was "understandable" that some people had found the delay frustrating.
