Winter solstice and end of Mayan calendar marked

Thousands have gathered at Stonehenge in the UK to mark the winter solstice and key Mayan sites in Central America to mark the end of the Mayan calendar.

The date - 21 December 2012 - is, some believe, the end of the "long count" calendar of the Mayan civilisation.
