Viviane Reding: Long road to EU-US data deal

The EU Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding, has told the BBC's Nik Gowing how the revelations that America's National Security Agency had been spying on the European Union was a "wake-up call".

Ms Reding explained that the EU knew that the spying had been happening, but did not know the scale of the information that was being collected.

She revealed that she has been negotiating for two years "to have an umbrella agreement between the United States and Europe on the protection of data in police and judicial co-operation."
