Fuel price protests blight Nigeria
Demonstrations have taken place across Nigeria against the rising price of fuel, following the removal of government subsidies.
A general strike means public transport ground to a halt while shops and offices closed. At least one person was killed and others injured in the northern city of Kano during clashes with the police, while in Lagos a demonstrator died after police opened fire to disperse a crowd.
Yusuf Tuggar, a former member of Nigeria's House of Representatives, said cancelling the subsidy was not economically justified.
