Jacob Zuma outlines South Africa mine protest inquiry

South African President Jacob Zuma has outlined the terms for an inquiry into the shooting dead of 34 miners by police at a protest over pay last week.

Earlier this week Mr Zuma expressed sympathy with some of the grievances expressed by the Marikana miners, saying the mining sector could afford to increase wages.

He said the inquiry would look at how mine owner Lonmin plc dealt with unrest among the workforce, before also scrutinising various aspects of the police force's conduct.
