US 'seeking clarity' on Algeria hostage situation
Algerian forces have moved against Islamic militants holding hostages at a gas facility in eastern Algeria, according to the state news agency.
Reports quoting militants said at least 34 hostages and 14 kidnappers died in the operation - but firm details of events have yet to emerge.
Militants had earlier said they were holding 41 foreign nationals. They were believed to include British, Japanese, US and Norwegian citizens.
Speaking in Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said that the US was "seeking clarity" from the Algerian government over Thursday's events and "closely monitoring" the situation.
