South Africa's gold miners dig in over salaries

Wage negotiations between mining companies and labour unions have begun in South Africa, starting with the gold sector.

It is a tense time for the industry as the price of precious metals has fallen sharply and mining firms have been under pressure to cut costs.

There have been strikes and riots across the mining industry over pay and job cuts, and mining firms have found their bottom line squeezed.
