South African gold miner: 'I have to support four households'

Some 80,000 gold miners in South Africa are due to go on strike, joining tens of thousands of workers from other sectors.

The mining unions are demanding far more than the 6% wage increase offered by the gold-mining companies.

The dispute comes at a time when South Africa's gold mining industry is in trouble - production has been falling as the cost of mining the gold has increased, with companies forced to mine to record-breaking depths. The price of gold has also fallen in recent years.

Albertina Tsoloane has been working down a mine in Driefontein near Johannesburg for seven years.

Her basic salary is about 5,000 rand (£315; $500), although with overtime she can take home around 7,500 rand a month.

She spoke to BBC News about her struggle to make ends meet.
