Pienaar on Mandela: He made me proud to be South African

A former captain of South Africa's rugby team has described the moment Nelson Mandela famously donned the Springboks jersey at the 1995 World Cup final in Johannesburg.

Francois Pienaar spoke to BBC Hardtalk about the gesture - which was viewed by many as a defining moment for the "Rainbow Nation".

Up until that game, the national team had been synonymous with oppression and apartheid.

Mr Pienaar said: "I couldn't sing the anthem because I knew I would cry, I was so proud to be a South African that day."
