South Sudan minister: 'The other side must compromise'

Direct talks between the government of South Sudan and rebel forces over a potential ceasefire were due to take place on 4 January.

Fighting in the country has led to at least 1,000 people having been killed since 15 December.

South Sudan Foreign Affairs Minister, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, told the Today programme's Mishal Husain that the government was "serious" about reaching an agreement with rebel forces.

But he stressed that "the compromise is for the other side".
