The Gambia president: 'It was not a coup but an invasion'

The Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has denied that there has been an attempted coup in his country, accusing "foreign dissidents" of being behind Tuesday's attack on the capital, Banjul.

He blamed dissidents based in the United States, Germany and the UK.

Gambian television showed President Jammeh, who seized power in the tiny West African nation in 1994, inspecting weapons allegedly used in the attack.
