Tension mounts ahead of Burundi elections

Gunfire and explosions have been heard in several parts of the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, hours before the start of a controversial presidential election.

President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term - despite criticism that it violates a peace accord - has triggered months of street protests.
