On patrol with the Nigerian army battling Boko Haram

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari won the country's March election partly on a promise to crush the militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

In August, the president gave the military an end-of-year deadline to defeat the insurgents who have killed thousands of people and displaced more than two million in the last six years.

With the deadline fast approaching, the BBC's Martin Patience has gained rare access to the city of Maiduguri at the heart of the insurgency.
