Afghan women 'failed' by justice system

There is still widespread impunity for perpetrators of violence against women in Afghanistan, according to a report from the United Nations.

A landmark law introduced three years ago, aimed at giving women better protection, is being largely ignored, the UN says.

Reported incidents of violence against women have increased almost 30% this year. The report comes after a number of brutal killings of women and girls recently, including the assassination of a senior woman official yesterday in the eastern Laghman province.

Orla Guerin reports from Afghanistan.
