French soldiers killed and hostage feared dead in Somalia

France has stepped up security around public buildings and transport fearing retaliation by Islamist groups after French military operations in Mali and Somalia.

A pilot was killed as air strikes were launched on hundreds of Malian rebels.

In Somalia, a French hostage is believed to have been killed during a failed raid to free him by French special forces. Two soldiers also died.
