Breeding scheme for endangered Asian Gharial crocodiles

Known for their extremely thin jaws, Gharial crocodiles once thrived in all the major river systems of Indian subcontinent.

However, their numbers have reduced drastically - more than 95% since 1946 - due to overhunting for skins, habitat destruction and environmental damage.

The crocodiles have been designated as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Anbarasan Ethirajan visited Nepal's Chitwan National Park, which has one of the few Gharial breeding centres in the world.
