Australia's migrant island detainees

In an effort to deter boat people from seeking asylum on Australia's shores, the country's government came up with an alternative.

Known as the Pacific Solution, some immigrants ended up not in Australia, but in another country altogether. The policy has been criticised and called "inhumane".

Nick Bryant gained access to a detention centre on the island of Nauru, where asylum seekers from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq and the Palestinian territories are being held.

Newsnight asked the Australian government for a response to this film, but it declined to comment.
