100 Women: Indonesia seeks end to maid service

Lawmakers in Indonesia are considering a plan to stop sending domestic workers overseas by 2017.

The draft regulation does not restrict workers from going abroad but it does aim to discourage them, by making it harder for employers to hire labour from Indonesia and encouraging more Indonesian workers to stay at home.

But the proposal has been met with criticism from activists who say it is not the best way to protect the almost five million Indonesian women who go overseas to work, because there are not enough jobs being created for them in Indonesia.
